Dry Needling, FAQS

1.What is dry needling?

Dry Needling is the insertion of sterile single use acupuncture needles directly into myofascial muscular trigger points.

2.How does dry needling work?

Inserting dry needles directly into the skin and muscles can help to cause biochemical changes which assist in reducing pain. Spasm reduces blood flow in the muscle meaning less oxygen and food in the muscle, inserting a dry needle into a spasmed muscle causes the muscle to relax.

3.Is dry needling safe?

Studies have shown that dry needling is one of the safest forms of medical intervention known. It is far safer than using drugs. Only sterile needles are used during treatments

4.Does dry needling hurt?

Dry Needling is relatively pain free, however when the needle is inserted into a trigger point you may feel mild discomfort. On deep insertion of a needle you may experience a deep ache or tingling, this is completely normal and occurs as a result of trigger point stimulation. I have found the benefits and improvement felt after a session greatly outweigh any mild discomfort felt during the session.

5.Is there any difference between acupuncture and dry needling?

Both techniques use very fine sterile needles. Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medicine using meridians in the body and acupuncture points, whereas dry needling uses muscle trigger points

Dry Needling, getting straight to the point

Dry Needling is the insertion of a tiny needle into a painful muscle knot in the body with the aim of reducing discomfort.

There is no medication on the needle hence it’s referred to as dry.

Dry Needling can be used for a variety of musculoskeletal problems where muscles are thought to be a primary contributing factor to the symptoms.

I have found great results when using dry needling combined with orthopedic massage in treating shoulder, neck and back pain.

Other conditions in which I use dry needling combined with massage to help treat are hamstring, calf, quad strains, tennis elbow, golfers elbow, carpel tunnel, hip injuries, sciatica, knee and ankle injuries.
